It is quick to set up and simulates the central engagement of the Yom Kippur war of 1973. Having successfully held the Egyptian attack over the Suez canal, the Israelis launched a counterattack at Matzmed with the intention of throwing troops over the canal behind enemy lines. In the event units led by the then General Ariel Sharon (!) succeeded in breaking through the Egyptian lines and turning the course of the war. ACROSS SUEZ focusses on this event. The Israeli player has to forge an unbroken line of supply from one side of the board to Matzmed and from there ferry troops across the canal into Egypt. The Egyptian player has to stop him. With less than ten turns and a limited number of units on both sides
the action is fast and furious. The Israeli player has to quickly drive
across the board and break into Matzmed while holding the line against
Egyptian troops closing in on several fronts. Quick decisions have to
be made by both sides as Israeli and Egyptian reinforcements arrive to
alter the balance of the game. Given the so-called Chinese Farm's location
at the centre of the combat area and the main Israeli supply route the
action tends to focus there, as in real life. The historical turn-out,
an Israeli victory, was aided by some truly inept Egyptian commanding
and inspired gambles on behalf of the Israelis. Things will not be so
easy here.
